The Orange Walk Town Council continues to work diligently to provide reliable and efficient services to the residents of our municipality. However, achieving continued service excellence would not be possible without one of the most important components of our organization, our workers.
Among the many dedicated teams within the Council, one group often goes unnoticed despite playing a critical role in keeping our town clean and healthy: the Sanitation Department. These hardworking men perform demanding duties every week to ensure that garbage collection services reach every neighborhood across Orange Walk Town.
Sanitation work requires far more than simply collecting waste. The job demands discipline, dedication, patience, and fearlessness. Our sanitation workers operate under challenging conditions, working through the night, in the rain, in the cold, and often facing hazards that threaten both their safety and health.
While many residents are asleep, the sanitation teams are already hard at work. Some shifts begin as early as midnight, while others start around four o’clock in the morning, ensuring that garbage collection is completed efficiently and consistently each week.
The job also comes with real risks. Over the years, some sanitation workers have been bitten by dogs and other pests while carrying out their duties. In one instance, a worker developed a serious allergy to ant bites after repeated exposure while working in different collection areas. Despite these challenges, the team continues to perform their duties with commitment and professionalism.
Currently, the sanitation teams operate using two compactor trucks and at least two open-back trucks. The crews assigned to the open-back trucks face even more physically demanding tasks, as they must manually compact the garbage during collection. This requires tremendous strength and endurance as they move from street to street.
By the end of a typical workday, the sanitation teams collect approximately 40 tons of garbage, helping maintain the cleanliness and health of Orange Walk Town.
The Orange Walk Town Council ensures that workers are provided with all necessary safety gear to help protect them while performing their duties. In addition, the Council’s administration continues to invest in improving sanitation services. In 2026, two brand-new compactor trucks were procured, a significant step toward increasing efficiency and strengthening the town’s garbage collection system to meet the growing demand of our expanding community.
The Orange Walk Town Council recognizes and deeply appreciates the dedication and sacrifices of our sanitation workers. Their tireless efforts, often unseen by the public, play a vital role in maintaining a cleaner, healthier, and more livable town for everyone.
These men are not just sanitation workers; they are essential frontline contributors to the wellbeing of Orange Walk Town.
The Orange Walk Town Council would not be able to achieve continued service excellence without key players in our team – Our workers.
